Projector Terms Introduction: Rainbow Effect
 
In this guide, we will share the term rainbow effect. So, what is the rainbow effect?
You can regard the rainbow effect as the shadow left by the visible red, blue, and blue colors. This phenomenon often occurs when bright objects appear on a nearly dark background, such as the scrolling credits at the end of most movies.

For some people, rainbows are visible all the time, while for others, they rarely see them unless they move their heads quickly along the picture. There are even some people who never experience a rainbow at all. In fact, the reason for this phenomenon comes from the concept of the flicker fusion threshold.
The "rainbow effect" is widely seen in single-chip DLP projectors. As mentioned earlier, because single-chip DLP projectors use a color wheel to control the colors, there is really only one color on the screen at any given moment. If the human eye moves quickly in front of the projection screen, the resulting image's combined colors will be visible to the naked eye.
 
Manufacturers of single-chip DLP projectors eliminate this defect by using faster color wheel speeds and more color segments, which is what we now see on the market as double, triple, or quadruple speed color wheels. For example, a six-segment color wheel (red, green, blue, red, green, blue) rotating at twice the speed will result in a color wheel that is four times the speed. Another method is to change the segmented color wheel to an Archimedes spiral color wheel, which moves colors up and down the screen. A normal segmented color wheel has a short pause between color transitions, which means that the more color segments the wheel has, the darker the projected image will be.
